Still my purest driving experience ever - cousin's '76 2002 4 speed, crank windows, perfect balance. Oh how I miss it ....

I might be biased, but it's the best car I've driven. Everything at once is such an occasion and experience. I've driving a 56 Ford Fairlane and yes it was nostalgic and I felt like I was in American Graffiti, but the thing was a boat and scared me above 70mph. I've driven almost all new BMWs and none excite me. You are doing 80mph without even knowing it and about to fall asleep. The 2002 loves to have fun and rev to the redline. It's a blast and once I get better rubber and an alignment, all my suspension upgrades should really come together nicely.

AM/FM radio, 4 speed box, crank windows, crank-open sunroof, dealer-installed A/C, but do you really need it? The 2002 is immediate, underpowered, and so simple that you can toss it into a corner, approach the limit, back off, and squeal the tires nonetheless. Give me the steel wheels and the thin tires. Still, on Baltimore back roads, the best drive I've ever had. Miata comes close, but the balance isn't there.

My car has the radio/AC/sunroof delete for lightness. Haha, less accouterments that I don't need. With the weber I've thrown on, it's still slow as ever, but the noise and the experience makes you feel like you're flying. The tires also love to squeal. I'm become a bit of a hoon getting the back end out often. I think it shocks people that such an innocent looking car is making so much noise and fuss. And Baltimore back roads. Where at? I grew up in Hunt Valley and Towson and frequent the city. Do you still live in the area?

Nope - Steve in Manhattan gives it away, but I recall a hooning session out near where the grandparents are buried. In the 1800s, Jews could not buy land in Baltimore proper, so old graveyards are way out of town. Grew up in DC, but the 2002 sessions remain in my mind. That car is pure - you are right - looks like a commuter car, but then toss it into a curve.

Glad to hear from the tone of your post that you still have the 2002. Thought for a second you had sold it.

Nope, bought it 2.5 years ago as my first car and have no plans of ever selling it. It's cheap, fun, and reliable. What more could I want.

Wish I could get my cousin's back - red, black vinyl, stock but for the crank sunroof. If you look up the word "car" in the dictionary, it should show you a BMW 2002.
